The Fight Club Giving Aspiring Boxers a Fighting ChanceWhen the pandemic shut down professional fighting gyms in California, it left many aspiring boxers and mixed martial artists without an outlet to work on their craft. Since being founded last June, Backyard Squabbles — a backyard fight club based in South Los Angeles — has restored that platform for many local amateurs and pros. For the past year, the organization has hosted monthly events in literal backyards outfitted with a 20 by 20-foot ring, local food vendors, a resident DJ, and a modest crowd of friends and family in attendance to watch carefully curated matchups between trained fighters.

Homeless Families Are Taking Over Vacant Homes to Protect Themselves From CoronavirusIn most major American cities, residents have been told to stay home and avoid unnecessary contact with others to slow the spread of coronavirus. But California has by far the largest homeless population in the United States, and while state and local jurisdictions have taken certain measures to protect the unhoused from COVID-19, the vast majority are being left in the lurch. That’s why a group of families in Los Angeles decided to take matters into their own hands, forcing their way into a number of vacant homes owned by Caltrans, the state transit authority, in the East LA neighborhood of El Sereno.

The Twin Brothers Helping Latino BusinessesThe number of Latino-owned small businesses is exploding at 3 times the national average. But most individual Latino businesses aren’t growing at all.
